Why

Requirements

Dedicated enterprise and cloud circuits, data center interconnects and branch links promise bandwidth, delay, loss and availability, but experience depends on more than bandwidth. RFC 6349 notes that L2/L3 tests alone do not fully represent end-user experience: TCP throughput also depends on RTT, bottleneck bandwidth, buffers, loss and windows. Acceptance and routine checks should therefore assess consistent application quality, not just provisioned bandwidth.

BestPerf actively probes and schedules measurements without waiting for user complaints. It records RTT, directional loss, jitter, micro-outages, TCP goodput and quality under load. Flow Hunter can remain passively connected to critical links for SLA monitoring, session anomalies, protocol-stage observations and retrospective analysis, linking trends to real sessions.

How

Implementation

1

Define Measurement Scope and Application Paths

Deploy BestPerf nodes at headquarters, branches, cloud VPCs, data center exits or carrier handoff points. Identify whether each test covers a circuit, VPN, SD-WAN, cloud connection or internet exit. Configure measurements in both directions to avoid misleading conclusions from one-way throughput alone.

2

Establish SLA Baselines and Scheduled Tasks

Schedule measurements every 5 or 15 minutes or around peak periods. Record RTT P50/P95, directional loss, jitter, micro-outages, TCP throughput and quality under load. Use sustained stability windows for acceptance and weekly/monthly trends for operations.

Result

Expected Outcomes

Turn Perceived Quality into Quantifiable Baselines

Identify the exact link, direction and time window with increased RTT, loss, jitter or micro-outages, instead of relying on reports of slowness or intermittent failures.

Use the Same Metrics for Acceptance and Ongoing Monitoring

Reuse BestPerf tasks for delivery acceptance and scheduled checks to keep acceptance reports and operational measurements consistent.

Connect Real-Time Monitoring and Retrospective Analysis

Flow Hunter observes real traffic during SLA operation and retrieves sessions and PCAP evidence afterward, supporting quality discussions beyond isolated metrics.

Produce Reviewable Reports and Evidence

Deliver more than throughput or delay figures: include topology, parameters, timelines, quality curves, key sessions, anomalies, PCAP extracts and retest results. Development, testing, operations, vendors and customers can discuss the same evidence rather than relying on screenshots, verbal descriptions and repeated debate.
