End-to-End Satellite Application Performance Testing

VSAT/Modem, Ground Station, TCP Proxy, SD-WAN and Application QoE

Repeatably validate end-to-end satellite paths, components and applications with reduced dependence on satellite airtime. Test VSATs, modems, stations, TCP proxies, SD-WAN, QoS, servers and real traffic.

Why

Requirements

Satellite systems include terminals, VSATs, modems, antennas, stations, gateways, TCP proxies, SD-WAN, security, QoS and applications. Passing an isolated ideal-lab test does not establish stability across orbital conditions, high RTT, bandwidth variation, rain fade, interference, outages, handovers and concurrent workloads.

Satellite airtime is expensive, limited and hard to repeat; weather, orbit, beams, interference and load change. Following Apposite's satellite testing approach, labs should assess full-path throughput, delay, loss, response and QoS, while isolating individual VSATs, modems, proxies and gateways to locate bottlenecks.

3GPP NTN covers satellites, HAPS and UAS; LEO/MEO/GEO differ in delay, coverage and handover. Satellite services mix voice, video, web, files, telemetry, command applications, IoT, maintenance and tunnels. Use real workloads and background load beyond ping or one iperf stream.

How

Implementation

2

Create GEO/MEO/LEO and Beam-Handover Scenarios

Model GEO high RTT, MEO moderate delay and LEO lower delay with more frequent handovers/path changes. Apply dynamic delay, bandwidth changes, bursts, brief outages, rain-fade/interference effects, asymmetry and recovery to check session availability.

Expected Outcomes

Reduce Satellite Airtime and Field Trial Costs

Reserve costly, limited and nonrepeatable satellite tests for final confirmation. Perform selection, application validation, QoS tuning and issue reproduction in the lab first.

Locate End-to-End and Component Bottlenecks

Assess full-path requirements and isolate VSAT, modem, station, proxy, SD-WAN or security devices to distinguish link, device, policy and application limits.

Validate Critical Services during Handovers and Degradation

Check availability, recovery and QoS for voice, video, web, transfers, telemetry and mission applications under delay, loss, rain-fade effects, congestion, outages and handovers.

Produce Reviewable Reports and Evidence

Deliver more than throughput or delay figures: include topology, parameters, timelines, quality curves, key sessions, anomalies, PCAP extracts and retest results. Development, testing, operations, vendors and customers can discuss the same evidence rather than relying on screenshots, verbal descriptions and repeated debate.
