Run Your First Network Impairment Test

Use fixed delay to learn the process from connection to validation. For the multifunction series; on FPGA models, select the available hardware engine and existing links.

01 Connect the Test Link

Install a pair of WAN emulator test ports inline between the two endpoints. Connect the management port to the management computer's network. Test traffic passes through the test ports, while the browser provides management access.

Use the management address in the delivery documentation and your configured account. Confirm both test ports are Link Up and ingress RX counters increase with test traffic.

02 Select the Engine, Port Pair and Emulation Mode

Select the engine and port pair on the dashboard. A → B receives on Port A and transmits on Port B; B → A is the reverse. Select Emulation mode to apply impairments.

Check connectivity without impairments first. Record RTT, throughput or application behavior as the baseline.

03 Create a Link and Match Test Traffic

On the multifunction series, select New Link and name it. FPGA engines use existing hardware links.

Add rules to both ingress filters to route test traffic to the target link. For an isolated first test, select All Traffic; add IP, port or protocol conditions when testing a specific service.

Filters determine whether traffic enters the target link. After saving parameters, confirm that the link's packet counters are increasing.

04 Configure Fixed Delay

  1. Open link configuration and enable delay for A → B.
  2. Select Fixed; on the FPGA interface, select Constant.
  3. Set the unit to ms, enter 100 and apply.
  4. For a symmetric link, configure the same 100 ms delay for B → A.

A 100 ms delay in one direction adds approximately 100 ms to baseline RTT. With 100 ms in both directions, RTT increases by approximately 200 ms.

05 Validate, Save and Retest

Send the same traffic again and compare RTT, application response and counters before and after configuration. Use captures before and after impairments alongside application logs to investigate differences.

Record the port pair, filters, bidirectional parameters and results. Save the configuration for future tests. When finished, disable the test impairments or restore the initial saved configuration.

What Next?

  • Add loss, jitter and bandwidth limits to observe service recovery.
  • Orchestrate conditions into multiple stages and repeat them with scenario replay.
